Who must pay advance tax?
Anyone whose tax liability after TDS exceeds ₹10,000 in a year — typically freelancers, landlords, and those with capital gains. Pure salaried employees are exempt.
What are the due dates?
15 Jun (15%), 15 Sep (45%), 15 Dec (75%), 15 Mar (100%). Senior citizens without business income are exempt.
What if I miss an instalment?
Interest under 234B (shortfall in total) and 234C (deferment) at 1% per month. Pay late anyway — it stops further interest.
How do I pay?
On incometax.gov.in via Challan 280. Keep the receipts — you’ll need the BSR code and challan number while filing.
