HRA Exemption Calculator — FAQs
How is HRA exemption calculated?
Exempt amount = minimum of: (1) actual HRA received, (2) rent paid minus 10% of basic+DA, (3) 50% of basic+DA for metros (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata) or 40% elsewhere.
Can I claim HRA living with parents?
Yes, if you genuinely pay rent — pay by bank transfer and get rent receipts. Your parent must declare it as rental income.
Does HRA exemption work in the new regime?
No. HRA exemption is unavailable in the new tax regime — it’s one of the main reasons high-rent employees stick with the old regime.
What documents do I need?
Rent receipts and the landlord’s PAN if annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh. A registered rent agreement strengthens your claim.
