The short answer

₹1 lakh in an FD at 7% for 5 years matures to about ₹1.41 lakh. FDs are fully taxable at your slab — at a 30% slab, that 7% is really 4.9%, barely beating inflation. Fine for short goals and emergency money; poor for long-term wealth.

How to use the fd calculator

  1. Enter the deposit amount.
  2. Set the interest rate and tenure.
  3. See maturity value and interest earned.

FD Calculator — FAQs

What are current FD rates in India?

Major banks offer roughly 6.5–7.5% for 1–5 year tenures; small finance banks go up to ~8.5%. Senior citizens get an extra 0.5%.

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes, fully — added to your income and taxed at your slab. TDS of 10% applies if annual interest exceeds ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for seniors).

FD vs RD?

Same rates usually; FD needs the full amount upfront, RD builds it monthly. Pick based on whether you have the lump sum.

What happens on premature withdrawal?

You get a lower rate (typically 0.5–1% less than the contracted rate) plus possible penalties. Ladder FDs across tenures to avoid this.
