What counts as whitespace?

Will it join my paragraphs?
Only if you ask it to. By default paragraph breaks are preserved; blank-line removal just deletes the empty ones.
Why does pasted PDF text look broken?
PDFs store visual layout, not text flow — copying grabs line fragments with odd spacing. Normalising whitespace fixes most of it.
